Have you ever tried flavouring a butter before? Flavoured butters are a great topping to almost anything, and can save you a lot of time with a little bit of effort. They are also a really great idea if you have to use up some herbs that may go bad in a day or two.
This cilantro lime butter is amazing melted on corn on the cob. However, flavoured butters (also known as compound butters) are a great addition to any cooked vegetable, melted on meat, spread on your favourite bread or bun or even mixed into plain rice to kick it up a notch. Besides all the amazing uses for it, you can make it ahead and keep it on the freezer for up to 3 months!

How to Make Cilantro Lime Butter:
- The first step is to make sure you remove the butter from the fridge or freezer and let it come to room temperature, which will take about 20 minutes to a half hour. This will soften the butter and make it easier to incorporate the other ingredients equally.
- While the butter is softening, get your ingredients ready. With this compound butter, we added chopped cilantro, lime juice and zest, cumin and salt. So chop your cilantro, zest and juice your lime and measure out the salt and cumin. Set aside.
- The next step is to mix it all together thoroughly either by hand or in a mixer with a paddle attachment. Both ways work well, but the mixer will be much faster (and easier on the arms).
- When all of the ingredients are incorporated evenly lay out a sheet of plastic wrap, about 1 foot by 1 foot square. Scrape the butter out of the bowl onto the middle of the plastic wrap, then spread it down the middle lengthwise, like in the picture above.
- Fold the plastic wrap in half so that the butter is placed down the middle of the fold. Shape the butter into a cylinder with your hands, then roll the plastic wrap as tight around the butter as possible. Tighten each end by rolling the butter along the counter over and over one direction, holding each end tightly. Do this until the butter won’t roll anymore. Tie the ends of the plastic wrap.
- Place the butter in the freezer for 30 minutes at least before using. It will last about 3 months in the freezer like this.
- When wanting to use, slice disks off of the end of the butter and remove the plastic wrap. Place on warm food and let it melt. Enjoy!
